Beautiful Rising is a global toolbox for changemakers. Activists across the whole global south have teamed up to assemble a toolkit of creative activism for social movements seeking to strengthen the capacity, creativity, and effectiveness of social movements, activist groups, and civil society organisations to achieve lasting social change.
The project was initiated in 2014 by ActionAid Denmark in collaboration with Beautiful Trouble, and is funded by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) under the heading ‘Innovative Partnerships’. ActionAid Denmark is part of ActionAid, an international organisation based in Johannesburg that works with over 15 million people in 45 countries for a world free from poverty and injustice. Beautiful Trouble is a book, web toolbox, and international network of artist-activist trainers whose mission is to make grassroots movements more creative and more effective.
Inspired by the concept of a ‘pattern language‘ Beautiful Rising tease out the key elements of creative activism with the following toolbox:
STORIES: Accounts of memorable actions and campaigns, analysing what worked, or didn’t, and why. TACTICS: Specific forms of creative action, such as a flash mob or blockade. PRINCIPLES: Time-tested guidelines for how to design successful actions and campaigns. THEORIES: Big-picture ideas that help us understand how the world works and how we might change it. METHODOLOGIES: Strategic frameworks and hands-on exercises to help you assess your situation and plan your campaign.
With a site plenty of resources including trainings, they are currently operating in Uganda, Mexico, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Jordan and Myanmar.
