Verso Books is today the largest independent, radical publishing house in the English-speaking world, publishing one hundred books a year. Now based in both London and New York City, it was founded in 1970 in New York by the staff of New Left Review.

Verso Books was originally known as New Left Books. The name “Verso” refers to the technical term for the left-hand page in a book (see recto and verso), and is a play on words regarding its political outlook and also reminds of the vice versa – “the other way around”.

Verso’s Radical Thinkers series launched since 2005, bring together seminal works by leading left-wing intellectuals.
